Growing up in Fairbury,
Nebraska, the first 18 years of my life were
spent outdoors among the trees, animals and farm
life. I especially remember the four
seasons of the year. My interest in drawing
started during the second grade and has continued
all my life.
I
was among the young men in the early '40s who
were just the right age for World War II to grab
them up. Joining the Navy's flight training
program, I became a carrier pilot and served
aboard the carrier USS Wasp in the South Pacific.
Many hours were spent sketching when we were not
flying. Much of that work was of life aboard ship,
of detailed sketches of aircraft strikes for
intelligence information. Many of the pilots
wanted their wives painted from small photographs
they carried. Learning a great deal from watching
the open sea -- mostly how to capture motion -- I
began to transfer to canvas the many moods of the
water and weather.
The
'50s found me a color chemist, owning a dye plant
in Los Angeles, California. Working closely with
movie and television studios, decorators and
color designers gave me 13 years of hard core
study with color. As a result color is a strong
point to my work. I'm always looking for those
characters of nature that make my paintings a
little different and my very own.
The
last 35 years have been spent in the country near Beeville, Texas. The vast natural areas, cowboys
and cattle of this state have been an
inspiration. But I still like to paint what I
remember. People who search for paintings for
reasons other than decoration and dramatics might
just see all those years of observing and
remembering.
This
God given talent has been a big part of my life
and a joy. The next time you're outdoors, look
for my world....it is beautiful.
