| Wolves are pack
animals with a social order older than ours. When the
pack has to discipline a member, the worst sentence is
excommunicating the offending member. You just can't go
off and leave them! Most folks put their "dogs",
especially big dogs, outside in the back yard. Well I've
heard of and seen too many of these animals getting into
all kinds of trouble. For the most part become
uncontrollable and usually then destroyed or "sent
to the country" where they get into more trouble
killing sheep or chickens. Hey, they are a wolf for
goodness sakes! So running free is out of the question.
Chained or caged, their life becomes one of long days
dreaming of the chase, restless nights longing for a pack
to socialize with. Can't turn them back to the wild,
being with humans corrupts their values. They're likely
to get in more trouble with humans since they are
unafraid to get close. When Tundra was little, her
instinct when being confronted with people was to hide.
She had no use for people or people things. Having a wolf
for a companion is an awesome responsibility. Now if your
ready to be connected at the hip to a 70 to 120 lb.
shedding machine (365 days a year) for life, they can be
valued and loving member of your family. They are not dogs, wolves
have stronger needs than modern day dogs, Tundra
tolerates me as alpha female of our pack. I know she's
just biding her time . She knows that anyone who doesn't
have the good sense to hide under the bed when it
thunders, isn't long for this world anyway, so she will
be alpha female soon enough.
